Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of Control, occasionally played chess on the situation comedy TV series Get Smart, which made fun of the spy world. Since Smart earned his living in the intelligence world, it was natural for comedic effect to show him as a bumbler at an intellectual game, chess. So, he was not too successful - at the chess, anyway. Here, Max plays another agent.
