Computer science department where Anthony (Tony) Marsland and Jonathan Schaeffer teach. Marsland created AWIT (formerly WITA), a computer chess program which competed in the North American Computer Championships (1970, 1978-81, 1983-85) and World Computer Championships (1977, 1980, 1983, 1986). AWIT finished in 2nd place at the 4th World Computer Chess Championship 1983. Schaeffer created Sun Phoenix (formerly Prodigy, Phoenix), a computer chess program which competed in the North American Computer Championships (1981, 1984-87) and World Computer Championships (1983, 1986). It finished in 2nd place at the 1987 North American Computer Championship, and tied for 1st place at the 5th World Computer Chess Championship 1986.

Edmonton hosted the 6th World Computer Chess Championship in 1989.
